About this deal

Extreme heat and agitation should be avoided for all quilts, but particularly for quilts with cotton/wool, wool and silk battings (quilts made with these battings should be air-dried). All quilts, old or new, should be washed with care. It is recommended to wash by hand or in a washer on the delicate/gentle cycle using cool water. Be especially cautious with front-loading washers as the intense spin cycle on these machines can be very hard on quilts, and avoid agitating your quilts to keep them in tip-top shape. Bearding refers to the migration of batting fibers through the fabric of the quilt. It appears as small wispy bits of the batting fiber working their way through (up and out of) the fabric.

We’d recommend Thermore or Tuscany Polyester as both will provide stability to your hand-quilted quilt or project, and they offer a very nice hand, with very little resistance as your needle and thread pass through the batting We’d recommend Thermore, Poly-Down or Tuscany Polyester – Thermore will be flat, the other two will be lofty; keep in mind this will be a warm, perhaps even hot, quilt since the poly doesn’t breathe the way natural fibers breathe; for charity quilts – since you won’t likely get to meet the recipient, nor get to share the washing instructions with him/her, these are good batting choices as they’ll hold up to most any kind of laundering; for gift quilts – consider how likely the recipient is to recall your laundering instructions, and to follow themThread choice can also be a factor. Cotton is a dry fiber and occasionally cotton threads will pull at the cotton batting fibers during the quilting process – changing to a polyester thread mayalleviate the problem. We’d recommend Thermore as it lays flat and won’t cause anything placed on it to be unstable or to tip over

Our CloudLoft batting has many fans in Hawaii! – they love this batting for its extremely high loft and the way it shows off the beautiful flowers they add to their quilts; keep in mind that this batting provides a lot of warmth, so we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for quilts being used in hot and humid climates, but sometimes the trade-offs are worth it! This depends on the desired results – are you looking for a high- or low-loft finish? Are you more interested in your piecing and stitching standing out? How much quilting will you do and do you want your quilt to be fairly stiff or drape effortlessly? All of these are considerations when choosing batting(s) for a show quilt. If you answered that you’re making any of the following, you might want to consider trying a polyester quilt batting – which version you choose depends on the finish that’s desired, the intended user and use case, and how the quilt will be cared for:We recommend our Tuscany ® Silk batting or Thermore ® for art quilts – the Tuscany ®Silk provides a beautiful drape and won’t get super stiff even when heavily stitched; Thermore ®is a very stable, non-shrinking base layer– both are low loft and assist in showing off your stitching and piecing. It can really help you show off your piecing and/or stitching (like Wool batting does, but for a lot less money!) Please keep in mind that polyester fibers don’t breathe like natural fibers do – once your body temperature warms up, quilts made with Poly-Down ® or Thermore ® will hold in the heat; quilts made with Tuscany ® or Heirloom ® Wool or Tuscany ® Silk batting will ‘breathe’ and will not be hot.

We’d recommend Thermore if a flat finish is desired, and especially if you’ll be including many small pieces as a lofty batting made ‘hide’ or obscure small piecing; Tuscany Polyester can also be used, if a more lofty appearance is desired and if there’s not a lot of small piecing in the quilt We also recommend using high-quality thread for best resultswhen stitching and quilting, andgentle treatment during washing as well as taking care to not over-dry your quilts to prevent possible bearding issues. Now, most of these attributes can be either a positive or a potential negative depending on your answers to the five W’s of batting selection:Thermore ® was originally designed for clothing and miniatures. It is exceptionally versatile and can be used successfully wherever low loft and stability is needed or preferred. Many quilters prefer to use Hobbs Heirloom ® or Tuscany ® Wool batting in flannel quilts. The wool is very lightweight, and provides a cozy, puffy feel due to its loft and resilience. The combination of wool and flannel makes a very warm, cuddly quilt. If you prefer a flatter texture, we’ll suggest using 100% cotton or Thermore ®. Again, the choice comes down to the desired look, feel, weight and warmth of your finished quilt.
